Questions and answers
Does every malignancy disqualify a person from driving?
The diagnosis alone does not establish this. The chapter assesses location, spread, functional effects and treatment effects.
Why are brain tumours treated separately?
The document emphasises seizure risk associated with intracranial tumours and their treatment. The table provides a separate route for these tumours.
Why do brain metastases matter?
In the other-tumours entry, absence of brain metastases is one condition for a recommendation. Limb function, side effects and overall physical condition must also be assessed.
Are chemotherapy and radiotherapy assessed?
Yes. The document considers possible treatment-related impairment of driving abilities in addition to the disease itself.
Are pain medications relevant too?
Yes. The chapter mentions analgesics and antidepressants among treatments that can affect functions required for driving.
What is assessed in limb function?
Absence of limb dysfunction is one condition in the non-intracranial tumour entry. The issue is whether the person can perform driving actions.
What is required regarding overall physical condition?
In the other-tumours entry, overall physical condition must not interfere with driving abilities, alongside the other conditions.
What is assessed for a tumour in the eye?
Vision requirements for driving and the other tumour-entry conditions must be met. Consult the vision chapter as well.
Is intracranial surgery included?
Yes. The table covers intracranial tumours and the condition after intracranial surgery or intervention, referring to the December 2011 DVLA standards.
Are private and professional licences distinguished?
Yes. The other-tumours entry contains conditions for both. Read the appropriate column rather than relying on a conclusion for a different licence type.
