Questions and answers

What is assessed in the vision chapter?

The chapter covers visual acuity, visual fields, absence of the lens, night blindness and double vision. Some conditions also require an ophthalmologist’s opinion.

What visual acuity does the private-licence table require?

The 2013 table specifies 6/12 in one eye. Glasses or contact lenses may allow a recommendation requiring their use while driving; the other requirements must also be met.

Are professional-licence requirements different?

Yes. The table specifies 6/12 in each eye. With optical correction, it also specifies a difference of no more than 4.5 dioptres between the corrective lenses.

Can someone with vision in one eye obtain a private licence?

The table provides for this subject to the required visual acuity and field. This does not establish fitness for a professional licence, for which different requirements apply.

What visual field is required?

The table specifies at least 120 horizontal degrees for private vehicles and 140 for professional vehicles. Conditions concerning the type of field defect also apply; width alone is not sufficient.

What does double vision mean for driving?

The document describes impaired depth perception and spatial orientation. The table indicates unfitness, while allowing consideration of a restricted recommendation under its specified conditions.

Does colour blindness disqualify a driver?

The background chapter states that colour-vision tests are not among the medical requirements for a driving-licence recommendation in this edition.

How is night blindness addressed?

The chapter discusses restricting driving to periods with sufficient light for people with night blindness. Consult the table and the precise restriction; this is not permission to drive at every daytime hour.

What is assessed in glaucoma?

The document emphasises visual-field defects that may accompany glaucoma. Assessment concerns the disease’s effect on the visual abilities required for driving.

What does an artificial lens mean?

The pseudophakia section refers to visual-acuity requirements. Lens implantation does not replace assessment of whether the vision requirements are met.
