Questions and answers

Which conditions does the neurology chapter cover?

These include stroke, transient ischaemic attack, brain injury, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases and sleep disorders.

Are stroke and TIA the same entry?

No. The table separates CVA and TIA. Check the event type, functional effects and the column for the relevant licence.

What is assessed after brain injury?

The chapter discusses possible physical and cognitive effects and seizure risk. The table has a separate brain-injury entry.

Does a single seizure necessarily mean epilepsy?

The table distinguishes a seizure without an epilepsy diagnosis from a seizure with diagnosed epilepsy. This is essential when selecting the appropriate entry.

Are seizures occurring only during sleep addressed separately?

Yes. A dedicated entry applies. Check all its conditions; the heading alone is not permission to drive.

What happens when epilepsy medication changes?

The table includes treatment or dosage changes and seizure recurrence after changing or stopping treatment. The condition before the change alone is not sufficient.

Is multiple sclerosis assessed by diagnosis alone?

The chapter describes possible effects on movement, sensation, vision and cognition. Its significance for driving depends on functional impairments, not merely the diagnosis.

Why can neuromuscular diseases affect driving?

The document discusses loss of strength, sensation and coordination, assessing the ability to perform the actions required for driving.

How is sleepiness that endangers driving addressed?

The document indicates unfitness, with possible consideration of a restricted recommendation subject to sleep-specialist follow-up, adherence to treatment and assessment of its effectiveness.

What are MWT and RDI?

MWT assesses the ability to stay awake; RDI describes respiratory disturbance events in a sleep study. This edition specifies different measures for private and professional driving.
