Public-transport and heavy-vehicle licences: medical fitness beyond a private licence
Translation published: 15 October 2026
A private licence does not complete the assessment
Existing private-car drivers may expect an extension to involve only lessons and a test. Professional licensing also involves fitness requirements for the requested category. Fitness for one category does not automatically establish fitness for another.
Identify the category and route
Public transport, buses and heavy goods vehicles are not interchangeable terms for every purpose. Check the requested category and eligibility on the Ministry of Transport website. Distinguish an initial application, category extension, renewal and an individual medical referral.
Records should address the actual application
Official professional-licensing instructions include a medical declaration and fitness assessment through the authorised doctor or provider. Follow the document list in your summons. A specialist summary should describe the current condition and relevant issue, rather than only years of successful private-car driving.
Do not use the wrong medical column
The website’s 2013 standards distinguish private and professional licences. They are historical material, not a substitute for checking current requirements. When consulting a provision, check category, all conditions and the current source. A diagnosis name or one waiting period is insufficient.
What if one category is approved and another is not?
Clarify the precise decision, affected category and reasons. More records may be required, or a decision may need an appropriate challenge. Do not assume refusal of an extension cancels every existing category, or that all remain unchanged: verify official status.
When your livelihood depends on the licence
Prepare a clear account of your work and required category, but employment needs do not replace fitness requirements. Keep summons, submission and decision dates, and check any challenge deadline. A valid private licence does not guarantee professional approval.
