May you drive while waiting for a MARVAD examination or decision?

Translation published: 15 October 2026

A summons alone does not answer the question

A referral and the actual status of a driving licence are different matters. Check validity, the category you intend to use and every decision or restriction received. The absence of a medical response is not permission to drive.

What should you check?

Read the latest Licensing Authority notice for its start date, expiry, conditions and restrictions. Establish whether it affects every category or only one. Do not rely solely on the card in your wallet: an old document or photograph may not reflect changes made since issue.

If a disqualification, suspension or restriction was issued

Do not disregard it because an appointment is distant or records have been submitted. Seek official clarification and review relevant options. An undocumented telephone assurance does not replace a valid decision or authorisation. Clarify uncertainty before driving.

Will the licence expire before a response arrives?

Ask the Licensing Authority about renewal and any appropriate authorisation available in your circumstances. Its official renewal page describes a conditional temporary-licence route while awaiting certain medical reviews. Do not assume this applies to every MARVAD referral or overrides another restriction.

An appeal does not automatically authorise driving

Check separately the challenge procedure and whether a valid decision allows driving during it. Sending an appeal, complaint or urgent request is not enough to assume a prohibition or restriction has been removed. Retain the written authorisation on which you rely.

What if the licence is valid but a new medical problem appears?

Administrative validity does not answer every medical question. If symptoms could impair driving, obtain medical advice and do not drive when unable to do so safely. Do not change treatment to continue driving without consulting your clinician.
