A medical opinion for a MARVAD appeal — what should you check?
Translation published: 15 October 2026
Understand the issue before commissioning an opinion
After a negative decision, it is tempting to book a specialist immediately. First identify the reason that needs answering. A general description of health may not address the issue under review. Distinguish a routine follow-up record from a dedicated assessment.
Match expertise to the question
The appropriate professional depends on the disputed issue and file. Some cases need a particular medical specialty; others require a different assessment. There is no universal specialist list for every appeal. Clarify the assessment’s purpose and necessary records without asking for a predetermined conclusion.
Which material should be reviewed?
Where available and permitted to share, gather the decision, reasons, relevant tests, treatment and follow-up summaries, and current medication information. Identify the licence category and questions requiring clarification. Provide the whole picture, including unfavourable information; omissions can undermine assessment.
What should be clear in the document?
Check identification, date, professional identity and reviewed material. It should be clear what comes from records, examination or the examinee’s account. The explanation should connect findings and function to the disputed issue, acknowledging limitations or further tests where relevant.
A favourable opinion is not the committee’s decision
Even a reasoned document does not guarantee acceptance. Decision-making does not transfer to a private expert. Consider how the opinion fits the whole file and arguments rather than relying only on a concluding sentence of fitness.
Do not wait for the opinion before checking deadlines
Booking an assessment or awaiting a report does not justify assuming time has stopped. Establish the filing route and deadline promptly and check how to handle material not yet ready. A further clinical examination does not replace the required procedure.
