Questions and answers
Does every psychiatric diagnosis imply unfitness?
The table concerns severity that disrupts insight, behaviour, cognitive abilities or perception required for driving. The diagnosis alone does not determine the conclusion.
Which abilities matter in assessment?
The chapter mentions attention, concentration, memory, alertness, visuospatial function, impulse control, judgement and problem-solving.
What is insight and why does it matter?
Insight means understanding one’s condition and its consequences. The document emphasises awareness of how a mental-health condition affects driving safety.
How is acute psychosis addressed?
The chapter lists acute psychosis among conditions that disqualify a person from driving. Distinguish it from a controlled condition assessed under the table’s requirements.
Are medication side effects assessed?
Yes. Drowsiness and treatment-related impairment of driving abilities are explicit considerations. A restricted recommendation requires absence of side effects that interfere with driving.
What is required to consider a restricted private-licence recommendation?
The table includes treating-doctor follow-up, continuous cooperation, a controlled condition, insight and absence of disruptive side effects or accompanying problems such as drug or alcohol use.
Who provides follow-up for a professional licence?
The professional-licence table specifies periodic follow-up by the treating psychiatrist, with reports addressing its specified conditions.
Does cooperation with treatment matter?
Yes. Failure to cooperate with necessary treatment is a factor in unfitness. Continuous cooperation is a condition for considering a restricted recommendation.
Is alcohol or drug use relevant?
Yes. The table requires ruling out accompanying problems such as drug or alcohol use as part of the conditions for considering a restricted recommendation.
Does the document recognise driving’s role in rehabilitation?
Yes. It states that driving may support rehabilitation for some people, while function and driving-safety risk must also be assessed.
